I’m not queer
Story
In 1950s Mexico City, an American expat in his late forties lives a lonely life amidst a small American community. However, the arrival of a young student forces the man to finally form a meaningful relationship with someone. Ultimately, it was Daniel Craig who convinced Luca Guadagnino to cast Drew Starkey after watching an audition tape with Guadagnino and telling him, “That’s the guy” after seeing Starkey. [telepathically] Eugene Allerton: I’m not queer. Lee… William Lee: I know. Eugene Allerton: I’m disembodied.. Features Orfej (1950).
This word has several meanings
QUEER. The most common is “strange or odd.” The second most common usage is “homosexual.” Both meanings apply to this film, but the first meaning is probably more apt. This movie is more like APOCALYPSE NOW than BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. The story follows "Lee", a man in his early 50s in the 1950s. He is an American who has achieved a certain level of financial success and is now living a relatively hedonistic expat life in Mexico. He is an alcoholic and in the early stages of drug addiction. He spends his days and nights hanging out in gay bars and having meaningless relationships with men who have nothing to do with him being gay. It is an empty existence.
What does he want?
He wishes he knew. He can’t put it into words. He meets a younger man who seems to be bisexual (his partner at the bar is a woman), but they develop a relationship. It is not particularly satisfying for him. He wants more from the younger man than the younger man is willing to give. He eventually convinces her to accompany him into the South American jungle to find a plant that contains a drug that supposedly allows him to develop telepathic powers. He believes that this drug will enable him to understand what he wants without resorting to words. He is told that there is a female shaman in the jungle who can obtain the plant for him.
This film is a wonderful one to watch
The two men go into the jungle and indeed find the woman, who is a feral force played by Lesley Manville – a knife-wielding, gun-toting old woman who seems bloodthirsty. They gain her trust, at least partially, but she warns them against taking the drug. It opens a door that they will not be able to close. I am glad I saw this movie, but it is not for everyone. The ending is mysterious, and the gay sex scenes may be too specific for some. It’s not exactly hardcore pornography, but it’s close to it, mostly because of the sound effects. And the drug-induced hallucinations can be very disturbing for some people. The art direction and cinematography are outstanding, every scene is beautifully composed.
The acting is also outstanding
To me, it was reminiscent of Edward Hopper’s paintings in its depiction of the objective isolation of the psyche. Daniel Craig can break your heart if he does very little. I predict that both he and Lesley Manville will get Oscar nominations – Manville could win in the supporting actress category. It wasn’t until I saw her name at the end that I realized that this is the same actress who played the title role in MRS HARRIS GOES TO PARIS. It’s a great performance, I think this film will become a staple in the art world. It definitely deserves more than one viewing.
